Baseball Recap: Pickering Comes Up Short

Pickering extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Friday, dropping them down to 0-6. They lost 22-7 to the Northwood Gators. On the bright side, the seven- run performance marked the Red Devils' highest-scoring game to date.

Carson Smith and Tyler Cryer did some serious damage despite the final result: Smith got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs, while Cryer went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That hit was Cryer's first of the season. Israel Araiza was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.

As for Northwood, their victory bumped their record up to 7-4. Considering they have won six contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

On Northwood's side, Braxten McFarlain made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. McFarlain has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Northwood is 5-1 when McFarlain posts two or more runs, but 2-3 otherwise.

In other batting news, Mannie Magallon was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (three). Another player making a difference was Jesus Gonzales, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Pickering will face off against DeQuincy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Northwood, they will venture away from home to challenge Lakeview at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
