Volleyball Recap: Salida's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

Salida lost against Gunnison back in September of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Spartans fell just short of the Cowboys by a score of 2-1. The Spartans' loss signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.

Salida started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last two. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 21-25, 25-12, 15-5.

Defeat or not, Salida got some senior leadership from Madisyn Wilcox and Cooper Fisher. Wilcox had ten digs and three aces, while Fisher had eight digs and two assists. Wilcox is also on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted 13 or more in each of the last 14 games she's played.

Gunnison's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aubriel Loken, who had 14 digs and three assists. That's the most digs Loken has posted since October 9th. Another player making a difference was Natalia Sabino, who had 14 assists and six digs.

Salida's loss dropped their record down to 14-7. As for Gunnison, their win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5.

Salida didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 2-0 victory against Del Norte on the 1st. As for Gunnison, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 2-0 win against Telluride on the 1st.
