Basketball Recap: Downey Sets Scoring Season-High Against Gardena

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Downey). They took down the Gardena Panthers 70-53 on Tuesday. That's more bragging rights for the Vikings, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Downey was led to victory by Christopher Medina and Alessandro Garcia. Medina shot 54% from the field on his way to 14 points in addition to eight boards and five assists, while Garcia went 5-for-6 en route to 11 points along with six steals and five rebounds. Those 11 points gave Garcia a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Matthew Topete, who shot 45% from the field to rack up 11 points and five rebounds.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Downey was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

The win made it two in a row for Downey and bumps their season record up to 2-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.0 points over those games. As for Gardena, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Downey will take on Saugus in a tournament on Friday. As for Gardena, they will be taking part in a tournament against Lawndale at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
