Softball Recap: Toronto Takes a Loss

Toronto came into this matchup off a tough 13-run defeat last Friday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Bridgeport Bulldogs by a score of 8-6 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Red Knights have suffered since April 8, 2024.

Laney Danko spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on four hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Jaylee Brown was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Lily Sapp was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Toronto has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season. As for Bridgeport, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Toronto is packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will challenge Wheeling Central Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Maroon Knights' pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so the Red Knights' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Bridgeport, they will head out to face off against Shadyside at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed seven runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of.
