Basketball Game Preview: Rocky Mount Prep Jaguars vs. SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars

A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Rocky Mount Prep Jaguars take on the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Friday... One thing working in Rocky Mount Prep's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.

Last Monday, Rocky Mount Prep ended up a good deal behind Wilson Prep and lost 79-60. The matchup marked the Jaguars' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Kobe Davis, who posted 14 points. Trey'Von Nicholson was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Meanwhile, SouthWest Edgecombe posted their closest win since February 19th on Saturday. It was close, but they ultimately received the gift of a 51-49 victory from a begrudging Cougars squad. Given their advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 109th, while the Warriors are ranked 335th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Zy Thigpen and Nyzir Mills. Thigpen had a solid game and went 5 of 11 on his way to 14 points and five steals. Meanwhile, Mills did his best for the losing side, posting 11 points and five rebounds.

Rocky Mount Prep dropped their record down to 2-4 with the loss, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.2 points per game. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-2.
