Softball Recap: Walden Grove Takes a Loss

Walden Grove extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping them down to 10-12. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Nighthawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-5 on Monday.

Maddie Holzer made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Natalie Holzer, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

As for Ironwood Ridge, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games.

On Ironwood Ridge's side, Hayden Bores was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off eight hits. Bores has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Peyton Key was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Walden Grove will face off against Sunnyside at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Devils' pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Wolves' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Ironwood Ridge, they will head out on the road to face off against Empire at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Nighthawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Ravens have averaged an impressive 11.2 runs per game this season.
