Preview: Catalina Trojans vs. Flowing Wells Caballeros
The Catalina Trojans will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Flowing Wells Caballeros on Friday. Catalina is hoping to put an end to a nine-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Last Monday, Catalina took a serious blow against St. Augustine Catholic, falling 70-19. Catalina was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-12.
Meanwhile, winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 24 to ten on the offensive boards, a fact Flowing Wells proved on Thursday. They walked away with a 63-50 victory over Marana. Given Flowing Wells' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 38th, while Marana is ranked 221st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Kayla Bailey, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 12 rebounds. The match was her 13th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brianna Potter, who scored 12 points along with five steals.
Catalina's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Flowing Wells, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.
Catalina took a serious blow against Flowing Wells in their previous meeting back in December of 2019, falling 71-14. Thankfully for Catalina, Leamsi Acuna (who scored 15 points along with seven steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
