Baseball Recap: St. Johns Takes a Loss

St. Johns dropped to 12-15 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They fell just short of the Grand Ledge Comets by a score of 10-9. The Redwings were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Comets earlier this season, when they won 8-3.

Collin Buzinski and Nolan Koenigsknecht stepped up to the plate in a big way. Buzinski went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Koenigsknecht went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Caleb Vincent, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.

As for Grand Ledge, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.

On Grand Ledge's side, Braeden McDaniels was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI. McDaniels is becoming a predictor of the Comets' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 8-9 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Xavier West, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Coming up, St. Johns will welcome Okemos at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chiefs' pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so the Redwings' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Grand Ledge, they will head out on the road to square off against Mt. Pleasant at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
