Basketball Game Preview: Sayre Redskins vs. Troy Trojans

The Sayre Redskins will take on the Troy Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sayre has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the match with nine straight losses, while Troy will come in with four straight wins.

Sayre is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Canton on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Sayre was outmatched by Canton and fell 59-31. The Redskins were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 39-12.

Sayre's defeat came about despite a quality game from Abbie McGaughey, who posted 19 points and three blocks. Those 19 points gave McGaughey a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Troy took their game on Friday with ease, bagging a 71-30 victory over North Penn-Mansfield. The Trojans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five matches by 23 points or more this season.

Troy's win came from a few key players Sayre will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kailyn Sterling, who went 5 for 10 on her way to 11 points in addition to eight boards and six assists. She is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was Giana Renzi, who went 7 of 12 en route to 18 points.

Troy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

Troy's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-4. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 35.5 points. As for Sayre, their loss dropped their record down to 1-10.

Sayre was taken down by Troy 60-19 in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. Can Sayre avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
