Softball Game Preview: Boylan Catholic Titans vs. Guilford Vikings

The Boylan Catholic Titans are taking a road trip to challenge the Guilford Vikings at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Boylan Catholic played against Rockford East on Wednesday and won via forfeit.

On Wednesday, Guilford needed a bit of extra time to put away Freeport. They put the hurt on the Pretzels with a sharp 15-5 victory. The Vikings have beaten the Pretzels the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Pretzels has come to flipping the script.

Malia Welch made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over nine innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-6 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jessica Mocbeichel, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. That stolen base was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Georgia Eklund, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Guilford kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in May of 2025.

The win got Guilford back to even at 4-4. As for Boylan Catholic, their record is now 4-6.

Boylan Catholic might still be hurting after the 8-2 loss they got from Guilford in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. Can the Titans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
