Football Recap: Morro Bay Takes a Loss

Morro Bay's game on Friday was all tied up 21-21 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They lost to the Nipomo Titans on the road by a 49-34 margin. The defeat continues a trend for the Pirates in their meetings with the Titans: they've now lost eight in a row.

Despite the loss, Morro Bay still got an impressive performance from Sands Dougherty, who threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 79 yards and one score. Dougherty has been hot recently, having posted four or more passing touchdowns the last three times he's played. A healthy portion of Dougherty's aerial production (119 yards to be exact) went to Anthony Campanario, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Nick Evans produced another solid effort rushing for 245 yards and three TDs for Nipomo. Those 245 rushing yards gave Evans a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Griffin Groshart, who threw for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 15 passes.

Morro Bay's loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Nipomo, they pushed their record up to 6-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Morro Bay will head out on the road to challenge Delano at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates will be up against the Tigers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 38.78 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Nipomo, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Atascadero at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That matchup will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Evans and Damon Mitchell.
