Baseball Recap: Alamo Heights Comes Up Short

Alamo Heights was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They came up short against the Smithson Valley Rangers, falling 18-11. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Rangers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 last Tuesday.

Luke Spielhagen was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had over his last four games. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Blake Bader made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Alamo Heights: the team is 3-1-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-8 otherwise. Hunt Conger was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Alamo Heights' loss dropped their record down to 5-9-1. As for Smithson Valley, their victory was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-4.

Looking ahead, Alamo Heights will challenge Boerne-Champion at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Boerne-Champion's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so Alamo Heights' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Smithson Valley, they will take on Boerne at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
