Basketball Recap: Golden City Falls Despite Big Games from Caleb Hughes and Brendon Maneval

After flying high against Sheldon two weeks ago, Golden City came back down to earth. 2025 welcomed the Golden City Eagles with a 90-70 loss courtesy of the Hurley Tigers on Friday.

Golden City's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Brendon Maneval, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 15 points and six rebounds, and Caleb Hughes, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds. Hughes continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Robby Stafford was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Golden City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in six consecutive matches.

Golden City has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.4 points per game. As for Hurley, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-7.
