Basketball Game Preview: Union City Chargers vs. Athens Indians

Union City hasn't had much luck against Athens recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Union City Chargers will be playing at home against the Athens Indians at 7:00 p.m.

Union City is headed into Monday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Friday. They were dealt a 60-24 loss at the hands of Reading. The Chargers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 33-9.

Union City's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Ellie Williams, who posted six points and eight boards, and Lilly Eyre, who put up two points. Williams is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last eight games she's played.

Even though they lost, Union City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Athens posted their closest victory since January 31, 2024 on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Burr Oak, sneaking past 37-34. The win was all the more spectacular given the Indians' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 529th, while the Bobcats are ranked 237th).

Union City's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Athens, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 3-5 record this season.

Union City came up short against Athens in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 43-35. Can Union City avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
