Football Recap: St. Paul Takes Down Etiwanda in a Playoff Battle

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but St. Paul had no problem doing just that on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 38-19 victory over the Etiwanda Eagles.

Jordan Lauago was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 124 yards and two scores on only eight carries. Those 124 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Marley Luatua, who rushed for 73 yards and a pair of TDs.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: St. Paul was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 300 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

St. Paul didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Gavin Lannon, Gabriel Castaneda, and Lauago picked up one apiece. Castaneda's passing game has become a key predictor of St. Paul's success: the team is 2-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-6 otherwise.

St. Paul is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 4-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 35.4 points over those games. As for Etiwanda, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season.

St. Paul will head out to face off against Redondo Union at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Etiwanda does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
