Basketball Recap: Sahuaro Cougars vs. Salpointe Catholic Lancers
It was a good run, but the Sahuaro Cougars unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of Salpointe Catholic by a score of 61-59. Sahuaro was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Lancers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Sahuaro's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cisco Llamas, who scored 24 points along with five assists and three steals. Llamas is crushing the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Ponds, who scored 14 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Logan Martinez was his usual excellent self, scoring 17 points along with two steals for Salpointe Catholic. Bobby Smith was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Sahuaro's defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 20-3. As for Salpointe Catholic, they pushed their record up to 17-7 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Mica Mountain the next time they take the court. Salpointe Catholic will head out to face Mica Mountain at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Sahuaro will host them at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
