Recap: Morehead Panthers vs. McMichael Phoenix
The Morehead Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matchups by 26 points or more this season. They blew past McMichael 80-47 on the road. That looming 80-47 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Morehead yet this season.
Makel Smith was his usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-11 from deep and dropping a double-double on 33 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it nine consecutive games in which he has scored at least 25% of Morehead's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Chandler, who scored ten points.
When it comes to explaining why McMichael lost on Wednesday, one person who can't be blamed is Jace Dunn. Despite the final result, he scored 11 points. The contest was Dunn's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Isaiah Belcher, who scored eight points.
Morehead is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. As for McMichael, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-10.
Morehead will head out on the road to face off against T.W. Andrews at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. T.W. Andrews will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 446th, while Morehead is ranked 128th). As for McMichael, they have the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Walkertown at 7:00 p.m. on January 12th. Walkertown knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matchups -- so hopefully McMichael likes a good challenge.
