Basketball Recap: Rio Hondo Prep Takes a Loss

Rio Hondo Prep played a tough game on Monday in which they were outscored in every quarter. 2025 welcomed they with a 77-52 loss courtesy of the Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinals.

Despite the loss, Rio Hondo Prep still got an impressive performance from Rainn Pollock, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Nate Curtis, who posted seven points.

It was another big night for Jose Padilla, who went 10 of 16 on his way to 33 points and five steals for Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary. With that strong performance, Padilla is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. Another player making a difference was Nathan Contreras, who put up nine points and eight assists.

Rio Hondo Prep's loss dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Rio Hondo Prep will host Polytechnic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary, they will welcome St. Genevieve at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Genevieve will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary surely won't give up without a fight.
