Basketball Recap: Verdugo Hills Falls Despite Big Games from Nicole Olivera and Kayla Pimentel

Verdugo Hills extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping them down to 1-3. They took a 50-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Canyon Cowboys. If the Dons were looking for revenge after losing 76-49 to the Cowboys when the teams met back in January, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the loss, Verdugo Hills had strong showings from Kayla Pimentel, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards, and Nicole Olivera, who posted 15 points and three steals. That was a full 37.5% of the Dons' points, marking the third time in a row Olivera has scored more than a third of the team's points.

As for Canyon, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 55 points this season.

Canyon's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Darby Dunn, who dropped a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds. The game was Dunn's third in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shannen Wilson, who went 7-for-12 to rack up 15 points and six steals.

Coming up, Verdugo Hills will take on Central City Value in a tournament on Monday. As for Canyon, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 69-47 defeat against Oak Park on the 25th.
