Basketball Recap: Roanoke Rapids Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Gabriella Buffaloe and Shaniah Daniels

If Roanoke Rapids was feeling good fresh off their 64-28 takedown of Southeast Halifax last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Roanoke Rapids Yellowjackets took a hard 48-34 fall against the Bunn Wildcats on Friday. The Yellowjackets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Roanoke Rapids had strong showings from Shaniah Daniels, who went 5 for 9 en route to 12 points along with eight rebounds and six blocks, and Gabriella Buffaloe, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 13 points and four steals. Roanoke Rapids is undefeated when Daniels posts three or more blocks, but 3-6 otherwise.

Leading Bunn to victory were Makayla Richardson and Ny'Lah Mitchell. Richardson went 7 for 15 on her way to 23 points, while Mitchell dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards. The match was Richardson's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Chloe Arnold, who posted ten points.

Roanoke Rapids dropped their record down to 6-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Bunn, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 7-6.

Roanoke Rapids will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Southern Nash at 5:30 p.m. on January 28th. Bunn has already played their next game, a 0-0 defeat against Grassfield on the 18th.
