Softball Recap: Tesoro Comes Up Short

Tesoro extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 2-6. They fell 8-5 to the San Juan Hills Stallions. The Titans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Stallions apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Ellie Buffington was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Dace Miller, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

As for San Juan Hills, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That somehow still isn't as good as their 9-1-1 record this season. The game was the first time they have beaten Tesoro on their field since May 3, 2018.

On San Juan Hills' side, Grace Kumpel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks. Kumpel has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Grace Poyner was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Elle Slater, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Looking ahead, Tesoro will host El Toro at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chargers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Titans' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for San Juan Hills, they will head out to challenge Crescenta Valley at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.
