Football Preview: Pike County Pirates vs. Mt. Zion Eagles
The Pike County Pirates will challenge the Mt. Zion Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Pike County was able to grind out a solid victory over Greenville, taking the game 28-16.
Bryce Sammons continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 102 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries, while also throwing for 141 yards and a touchdown on only 11 passes.
Pike County wouldn't let Greenville keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Pike County can thank Johnson Anderson and Cj Parks for forcing both of them.
Meanwhile, Mt. Zion got themselves on the board against Baconton Charter on Friday, but Baconton Charter never followed suit. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Blazers 34-0 on the road.
Mt. Zion's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Xavier Buckner led the charge by picking up 163 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Buckner's longest reception was for an incredible 74 yards. Knox Israel was another key player, throwing for 182 yards and two touchdowns on only 17 passes.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Mt. Zion was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 218 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.
Mt. Zion's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Corey Hutter.
Pike County's record now sits at 3-1. As for Mt. Zion, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
