Football Recap: Chowchilla Tribe vs. Strathmore Spartans
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Chowchilla had no problem doing just that on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Strathmore Spartans, sneaking past 36-33.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Chowchilla to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nathan Fuentes, who rushed for 80 yards and a pair of scores. Tristan Beardsley was another key player, rushing for 88 yards and two TDs.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Chowchilla was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 303 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 211 rushing yards in eight consecutive matchups.
Chowchilla didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Fuentes and Levi Marsh.
When it comes to explaining why Strathmore lost, don't look at Isaiah Colunga. Despite the final result, he rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown on only 15 carries, and also threw for 228 yards and a pair of TDs. Colunga is becoming a predictor of the Spartans' success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is 4-2 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Matthew Santizo, who picked up 148 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
