Matanzas is a perfect 10-0 against St. Augustine since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. Matanzas will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Augustine at 6:00 p.m. Matanzas is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Matanzas proved they can win big last Monday (they won by eight) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Flagler Palm Coast 2-1. The two-run effort marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
LEAH STEVENS looked comfortable as she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Matanzas saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was ASHLEY SAMPSELLE, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
Meanwhile, St. Augustine was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their 17th straight loss dating back to last season. They fell 14-11 to Orange Park. One positive for the Yellow Jackets, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
Gus Campbell was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Julia Hansen, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Even though they lost, St. Augustine always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .535. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Matanzas pushed their record up to 10-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for St. Augustine, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-14.
St. Augustine's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Matanzas has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .433. It's a different story for St. Augustine, though, as they've only averaged .338. Will they be able to contain Matanzas' hitters?
Matanzas took their win against St. Augustine in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 17-0. Does Matanzas have another victory up their sleeve, or will St. Augustine turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
