Basketball Recap: Newcomb Skyhawks vs. Zuni Thunderbirds
The Newcomb Skyhawks lost against the Zuni Thunderbirds back in February of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Newcomb took a 60-43 bruising from the Thunderbirds.
Newcomb lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Makya Nelson, who scored 14 points along with five assists and four steals. Nelson is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for four games straight. Another player making a difference was Nevaeh Miller, who scored eight points along with 12 rebounds.
Newcomb has not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-10 record this season. As for Zuni, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-7.
Newcomb will look to defend their home court on Friday against the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Navajo Prep presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Skyhawks in New Mexico (the Eagles are ranked 28th, while the Skyhawks are ranked 91st). As for Zuni, they will head out on the road to take on the Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
