Basketball Recap: Wootton Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Maya Bellamy and Malia Bellamy

Wootton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 61-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Walter Johnson Wildcats. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 51-41 back in January.

Wootton's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Malia Bellamy, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and 11 boards, and Maya Bellamy, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds. Those 25 points gave Malia a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maya Gopstein, who posted six points.

Even though they lost, Wootton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive games.

Walter Johnson's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kendall Alexander, who went 7 for 17 to rack up 17 points along with six steals and five assists. Alexander is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed four or more in the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Elizabeth Martin, who had 13 points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Wootton's loss dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Walter Johnson, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-3.

Coming up, Wootton will challenge Bethesda-Chevy Chase on Monday. As for Walter Johnson, they will face off against Whitman at 7:15 p.m. on Monday.
