Softball Recap: Wilmington Extends Home Winning Streak to Eight

There's no place like home for Wilmington, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Coal City Coalers 1-0. This was a revenge game for the Wildcats: when they faced off against the Coalers on Monday, they had to take a 7-5 loss.

The result came thanks to Taryn Gilbert's shutout, as she gave up just six hits.

At the plate, Wilmington's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Keeley Walsh, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.

Wilmington pushed their record up to 13-4 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Coal City, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 13-6.

When Wilmington and Coal City next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. The Wildcats will try to stop Beecher's 16-game winning streak when they meet at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Wilmington 3.9, the Bobcats 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Coal City will square off against Bishop McNamara and their four-game winning streak at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
