Basketball Recap: Union Academy Comes Up Short

Union Academy suffered their closest defeat since January 30, 2024 on Tuesday. They fell just short of the North Stanly Comets by a score of 48-45. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 379th, while the Comets are ranked 137th).

Despite the loss, Union Academy still got an impressive performance from Miles McGinnis, who went 7 of 11 on his way to 19 points in addition to five assists and five boards. That's the most rebounds McGinnis has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Heath Lunsford, who posted six points along with nine boards and eight blocks.

Union Academy is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-6. As for North Stanly, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-2.

Union Academy will venture away from home to challenge Valor Preparatory Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Union Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.7 points per game this season. As for North Stanly, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Gray Stone Day at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. North Stanly is facing Gray Stone Day at the right time seeing as Gray Stone Day is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
