Soccer Game Preview: JSerra Catholic vs. Mater Dei

The JSerra Catholic Lions will challenge the Mater Dei Monarchs at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Mater Dei will be up against a hot JSerra Catholic team: the squad just extended their winning streak to ten. JSerra Catholic never let Orange Lutheran onto the board and left with a 4-0 victory on Friday. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked first, while the Lancers are ranked 39th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

JSerra Catholic hit Orange Lutheran with a four-pronged attack, as the team got scores from Jake Tatch, Brody Martinez, Gavin Allegaert, and Cameron Shafizadeh.

Meanwhile, Mater Dei came tearing into Friday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3 goals) and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Friars 4-1. That's two games straight that the Monarchs have won by exactly three goals.

Mater Dei used a slightly different lineup for their bout with Servite. Devin Madero played for 80 minutes having averaged 51.4 this season and Ayden Romo got 80 vs. an average of 56.1. Romo made the most of the opportunity, putting up three assists A few more games like that and he might be seeing even more time going forward.

Mater Dei's win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-1. As for JSerra Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 10-0.

JSerra Catholic took their win against Mater Dei in their previous meeting on January 10th by a conclusive 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for JSerra Catholic since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
