Softball Preview: Matanzas Pirates vs. Palatka Panthers
The Matanzas Pirates are on the road again on Tuesday to play the Palatka Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Last Saturday, Matanzas fell victim to a rough 13-2 loss at the hands of Western.
Matanzas saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ashley Sampselle, who went 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI. Sampselle has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive pitching appearances.
Meanwhile, Palatka unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Friday. They wound up on the wrong side of a tough 9-2 walloping at the hands of West Nassau. Palatka has not had much luck with West Nassau recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Zophia Clark made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Matanzas' defeat dropped their record down to 15-3. As for Palatka, their loss dropped their record down to 9-14.
Matanzas took their win against Palatka when the teams last played back in April of 2023 by a conclusive 15-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for Matanzas since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
