Baseball Recap: Straughn Comes Up Short

Straughn had lost three straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 10-17 to make it four. They came up short against the Headland Rams, falling 15-5. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Rams this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-1 back in March.

Matt Ashberry made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

As for Headland, they are on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 20 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games.

On Headland's side, Justin Parnell was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Parnell a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Wyatt Shelley, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Straughn will welcome New Brockton at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Headland, they will be playing at home against Enterprise at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Rams 3.5, the Wildcats 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
