Baseball Game Preview: Nelson County Governors vs. William Campbell Generals

The Nelson County Governors will take on the William Campbell Generals at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Nelson County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.

Having struggled with four losses in a row, Nelson County turned things around against Chatham on Friday. They never let the Cavaliers get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory. The high-scoring effort was just what the Governors needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.

Kevin Knight made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Nelson County is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 3-5 otherwise. Knight was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Caleb Thompson was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024. Hank Simpson was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.

Nelson County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, William Campbell didn't have quite enough to beat Altavista on Friday and fell 10-9. The Generals have struggled against the Colonels recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.

William Campbell's defeat dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Nelson County, the win got them back to even at 6-6.

Nelson County took their victory against William Campbell in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 12-0 score. Will the Governors repeat their success, or do the Generals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
