Softball Recap: New Britain Takes a Loss

New Britain extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 13 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 0-5 in the process. They lost 17-2 to the Maloney Spartans. The Golden Hurricanes were not able to make up for their defeat to the Spartans from their previous meeting back in March of 2024.

As for Maloney, the win got them back to even at 3-3. The game marked their most dominant victory of the season so far.

For Maloney's part, Stella Cicero made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Cicero has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jenna Quilty, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Oliviah Garcia-Matyka, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one double.

Looking ahead, New Britain will challenge Hall at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Maloney, they will head out on the road to square off against Conard at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Red Wolves will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight.
