Cardinal Newman and Dwyer are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Cardinal Newman Crusaders will face off against the Dwyer Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Cardinal Newman has ten straight victories, Dwyer has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Cardinal Newman is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past DeLand 11-1 on Wednesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
Dominic Demarzo was incredible, firing off two home runs, four runs, and five RBI while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gabriel Acevedo, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Cardinal Newman always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Dwyer came up short against Seminole Ridge on Thursday and fell 5-1. The match marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Dwyer also got a good showing from Brayton Torchia, who tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Torchia has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Dwyer saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Miguel Marrero, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double was Marrero's first of the season.
Cardinal Newman's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-0-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. As for Dwyer, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.
Cardinal Newman skirted past Dwyer 3-2 when the teams last played back in February of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cardinal Newman since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
