Baseball Recap: Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons Comes Up Short

Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons had lost 21 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 1-14 to make it 22. They came up short against the Mayfield Panthers, falling 11-4. The Golden Knights were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2021.

As for Mayfield, their victory ended a six-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-11. The high-scoring effort was just what they needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.

For Mayfield's part, Carter Goodemote and Landon Conyne made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Goodemote tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Conyne pitched three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Goodemote has become a key player for Mayfield: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 0-10 otherwise. At bat, Goodemote went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Conyne went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI Conyne has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Aiden Horn (C) and Cubby Roth (C) did most of the damage at the plate: Horn (C) went a perfect 3-for-3 with seven stolen bases, two RBI, and one run, while Roth (C) got on base in three of his four plate appearances with five stolen bases, four runs, and one triple. Mayfield is 2-1 when Horn (C) posts two or more stolen bases, but 0-10 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Grady Shea, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mayfield, they will look to defend their home field on Sunday against Northville at 5:00 p.m.
