Baseball Recap: Hialeah's Luck Changes for the Better on Tuesday

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Hialeah had no problem doing just that on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over the Varela Vipers. This was payback for the Thoroughbreds, who suffered an 11-1 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Matthew Gonzalez made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Hialeah's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Gonzalez was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run.

In other pitching news, Hialeah gave Jude Fernandez the start and clearly made the right call: he struck out nine batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. With that strong performance, Fernandez is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game.

Back at the plate, Jay Sobrino was excellent, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Miguel Reyes, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Hialeah moved to 9-10 with that win, which also ended their five-game losing streak. As for Varela, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9-1 record this season.

Hialeah will face off against Mater Academy Charter at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Thoroughbreds' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. Varela does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
