Football Recap: Wiregrass Ranch Skates Past Springstead with Ease

The matchup between Wiregrass Ranch and Springstead on Friday hardly resembled the 14-3 effort from their previous meeting. The Bulls claimed a resounding 48-20 win over the Eagles. Considering the Bulls have won three games by more than 20 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

A big part of Wiregrass Ranch's victory came down to the chemistry between Daniel Terry and his top target Donteis Austin. Terry threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 13.1 yards per attempt while Austin picked up 182 receiving yards and three TDs. Austin was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 56 yards.

Wiregrass Ranch's defense made their presence known, laying out Tysen Norton three times. Carmelo Joseph was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.

When it comes to explaining why Springstead lost, don't look at Norton. Despite the final result, he rushed for 141 yards and one score while picking up 8.8 yards per carry, and also threw for 246 yards and one TD. The Eagles are 2-1 when Norton posts 80 or more rushing yards, but 1-4 otherwise. 80 of Norton's passing yards were hauled in by Austin Stanina.

Wiregrass Ranch has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-5 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 5.4 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.08 in the others. As for Springstead, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 3-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Wiregrass Ranch will face off against Land O' Lakes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Terry and Chance Houston. As for Springstead, they will take on Wesley Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each contest than the last.
