Suburban recap Oct. 3, 2012
Tallmadge extended the longest winning streak in Suburban this week by beating Highland, 35-21. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
Nordonia moved up to 44 from 85 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 38-0 win over Copley helped the Knights improve their standing.
Tallmadge's dynamic duo of Anthony Gotto and Jacob Wood proved tough for the Hornets to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Gotto threw for 198 yards and five touchdowns and Wood had 135 yards receiving. Johnny Linn helped Tallmadge's passing attack out by catching three balls for 42 yards.
Devin Cunningham was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 24 carries, he ran for 142 yards as Cloverleaf beat Highland. Teammate Austin Smith added to the ground attack by rushing for 55 yards.
The Blue Devils' Gotto and Wood have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Suburban in both passing and receiving yards. Gotto has thrown for 1227 yards this season, while Wood, a 6-foot-5 receiver, has 27 catches for 407 yards. The Colts' Cunningham leads the league in rushing yards with 919.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Tallmadge takes on second place Nordonia. Last week, Tallmadge defeated Tom Lombardo's team, while Nordonia topped the Indians.
Cloverleaf's Cunningham is a mere 81 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
Green was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in the league. The Bulldogs vanquished Bobby Lake's team 47-21 earlier in the week.
