Basketball Preview: Belfry Pirates vs. East Ridge Warriors

Belfry and East Ridge are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2018, but not for long. The Belfry Pirates will square off against the East Ridge Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Belfry focused on turnovers this week as the team gave up 15 on Monday.

Belfry can't be to happy about their upcoming road match considering what happened when they opened their season on the away from home. They took a 64-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of Floyd Central. The loss continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Jaguars: they've now lost three in a row.

Despite the defeat, Belfry had strong showings from Jaxon Estridge, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds, and Brody Little, who went 6 for 10 en route to 13 points plus six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Zade Rash, who earned four points in addition to six rebounds and two steals.

Even though they lost, Belfry smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, East Ridge took care of business in their home opener on Tuesday (and then some). They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat June Buchanan 85-18. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Warriors as it put an end to their seven-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Belfry skirted past East Ridge 66-63 when the teams last played back in February. The rematch might be a little tougher for Belfry since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
