Preview: Casa Grande Cougars vs. Sunnyside Blue Devils
The Casa Grande Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Sunnyside Blue Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Two weeks ago, Casa Grande was fully in charge, breezing past Cienega 53-21 at home. The result was nothing new for Casa Grande, who have now won five matches by 30 points or more so far this season.
Casa Grande can attribute much of their success to Nathan Long, who rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Eltorna Gant, who threw for 114 yards and four touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.
Meanwhile, Sunnyside had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They walked away with a 12-3 victory over Cienega. The score was all tied up 3-3 at the break, but Sunnyside was the (much) better team in the second half.
Samario Garcia was the offensive standout of the game as he rushed for 123 yards.
Sunnyside's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Alex Yourgulez and his two sacks.
Casa Grande is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. As for Sunnyside, their win was their third straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 4-3.
