Football Recap: Athens Academy Skates Past Shaw with Ease + How To Watch

Athens Academy won the last time they faced Shaw and things went their way on Friday too. The Spartans took their contest with ease, bagging a 44-14 win over the Raiders. Given the Spartans' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 146th, while the Raiders are ranked 343rd) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

A big part of Athens Academy's victory came down to the chemistry between Chap Chapman and his top target Keyon Standifer. Chapman threw for 103 yards and one TD on only nine passes while Standifer picked up 87 receiving yards and one touchdown. What's more, Chapman racked up 142.4 passer rating, the most he's had since back in August of 2024.

Athens Academy was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 277 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 237 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

Athens Academy now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Shaw, they are on a four-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Coming up, Athens Academy will be playing at home against John Milledge Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight. After each having a week off, Shaw and Hardaway will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on the 11th. The matchup will give the Raiders their first taste of in-conference action this season.
