Basketball Recap: Downey Comes Up Short

After flying high against McNair on Wednesday, Downey came back down to earth. Downey fell 58-49 to Ripon Christian on Thursday. Downey was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Ripon Christian apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

When it comes to explaining why Downey lost, don't look at Solomon Paris. Despite the final result, he posted 16 points along with seven rebounds and four blocks. Paris is becoming a predictor of Downey's success: when he posts at least 15 points the team is 3-1 (and 1-2 when he doesn't). Emerson DiGiore was another key player, dropping a double-double with ten points and ten boards.

Jake Vander Veen produced another solid performance putting up 24 points for Ripon Christian. That makes it three consecutive games in which Vander Veen has scored at least a third of Ripon Christian's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Bunnell, who had 14 points.

Downey's defeat dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Ripon Christian, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-2.

Downey has already played their next game, a 55-53 loss against Burbank on the 12th. As for Ripon Christian, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-50 defeat against Central Catholic on the 12th.
