Two dominant backs in Andre Brisco and Hunter Dailey are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Cabrillo Conquistadores will venture away from home to challenge the Bishop Union Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Cabrillo is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They blew past Hoover 35-14.
Cabrillo can attribute much of their success to Gabriel Barraza, who threw for 179 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 84.2% of his passes, and Andrew Wallace, who gained 133 total yards and a touchdown.
Cabrillo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 246 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 212 rushing yards in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, after only 13 points in their last contest, Bishop Union made sure to put some points up on the board against Golden Valley on Friday. The Broncos really took it to the Bulldogs for the full four quarters, racking up a 49-21 win. Given the Broncos' advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 419th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 844th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bishop Union's win came from a few key players Cabrillo will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Emory Dondero, who threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns while completing 83.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 35 yards. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in September. Elliott Douda was another key back, rushing for 86 yards and one score on only seven carries.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Bishop Union, adding 13 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Douda, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Bishop Union's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 6.7 points on average over those games. As for Cabrillo, their victory bumped their record up to 8-3.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Cabrillo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 267.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Bishop Union struggles in that department as they've been averaging 152 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
