Newport Harbor found a leader in Virginia Peterson as the squad took down Northwood on Thursday. Peterson turned in nothing short of a gem, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

Coming up, Peterson and Newport Harbor will challenge Edison at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. Peterson has dominated as far as strikeouts are concerned (she's averaged 7.1 per game this season), but she's got her work cut out for her considering the Chargers have only allowed 2.5 per game this season.
