Basketball Recap: Maritime Academy Charter Comes Up Short at Home Against MAST Charter II

Maritime Academy Charter unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They fell 55-44 to the MAST Charter II Voyagers on Tuesday. The Seadogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Voyagers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2024.

Defeat or not, Maritime Academy Charter got some senior leadership from Mekhi Ford and Andy Figueroa. Ford went 7-for-14 to rack up 17 points in addition to five boards and five steals, while Figueroa posted 14 points and six assists. Ford is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Jeremy Gonzalez, who put up three points along with five rebounds and three steals.

MAST Charter II's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Andrew Lopez led the charge by putting up 15 points and five boards. Those 15 points gave Lopez a new career-high. Shane Twyman was another key player, dropping a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

MAST Charter II's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Maritime Academy Charter will head out to square off against Thomas A. Edison at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for MAST Charter II, they will venture away from home to challenge Philadelphia Academy Charter at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
