Basketball Recap: Jorge Penaloza's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sotomayor over Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica

After a string of three wins, Sotomayor's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They came up short against the Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica Seawolves, falling 69-48.

Sotomayor lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jorge Penaloza, who posted 24 points. Penaloza's morning made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Bryan Hernandez, who put up ten points along with five rebounds and five steals.

It was another big night for Darren Awili, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 21 boards for Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica. Awili is becoming a predictor of Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica's success: when he posts at least eight rebounds the team is 2-1 (and 8-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of London Johnson, who went 7 for 11 en route to 19 points.

Sotomayor's defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 10-11.

Sotomayor didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 85-43 win against Maywood Academy on the 22nd. Pacifica Christian/Santa Monica has also already played their next game, a 75-49 loss against Oakwood on the 23rd.
