Softball Recap: Evanston Comes Up Short

Evanston had lost eight straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 1-17-1 to make it nine. They lost 10-0 to the Taft Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildkits of the 9-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2024.

As for Taft, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-3. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won nine games by nine runs or more so far this season.

For Taft's part, they got a great performance from Michelle Esquivel as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Those seven strikeouts gave Esquivel a new career-high.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Haley Eccarius, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaida Matos, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

Looking ahead, Evanston will host Glenbrook South at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. As for Taft, they will head out to square off against Northside at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mustangs have averaged an impressive 7.7 runs per game this season.
