Softball Recap: Staples-Motley Drops Highest Score of Season Against Pelican Rapids

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Staples-Motley). They put the hurt on the Pelican Rapids Vikings with a sharp 24-3 win on Monday. With that victory, the Cardinals brought their scoring average up to 7.2 runs per game.

Leighton Bettis made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up three earned runs off only one hit. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five). She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Rachel Kossan and Jade Storry did most of the damage at the plate: Kossan went a perfect 5-for-5 with five runs, five RBI, and one triple, while Storry got on base in five of her six plate appearances with five runs, four RBI, and one triple. Those five RBI gave Kossan a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kate Kossan, who got on base in four of her six plate appearances with four runs.

Staples-Motley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They are 5-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

With the win, Staples-Motley broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-8. As for Pelican Rapids, they dropped their record down to 1-4 with the loss, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Coincidentally, Staples-Motley and Pelican Rapids will both be playing Barnesville the next time they take the field. The Vikings will host the Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Cardinals will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
