Softball Recap: John Carroll Drops Highest Score of Season Against Mercy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask John Carroll). Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Mercy Magic a 28-0 shutout on Wednesday. The Patriots have beaten the Magic the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Magic has come to flipping the script.

Emily Hildt made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, John Carroll got a massive performance out of Mia Anderson, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-5. Those four runs gave Anderson a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Gianna Gargano, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

John Carroll always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .702. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

John Carroll's win bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Mercy, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John Carroll will face off against Severna Park at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Mercy, they will challenge Archbishop Spalding at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Magic's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cavaliers have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season.
