Softball Recap: Rice Memorial Triumphs

Rice Memorial's game on Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. They walked away with a 9-4 win over the Vergennes Commodores. The Green Knights haven't had any issues with the Commodores recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Bella Messineo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on three hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Alayna Havreluk, who went 2-for-3 with five stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those five stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Ella Tatro was another key player, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

Rice Memorial hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive games.

Rice Memorial's win bumped their record up to 10-1. As for Vergennes, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-10.

Looking ahead, Rice Memorial will head out on the road to take on Milton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Yellowjackets will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Vergennes, they will welcome Enosburg Falls at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Commodores will need to watch out since the Hornets have now posted at least ten runs in their last three matchups.
